Autonomous Driving and Public Reason: a Rawlsian Approach

Abstract In this paper, we argue that solutions to normative challenges associated with autonomous driving, such as real-world trolley cases or distributions of risk in mundane driving situations, face the problem reasonable pluralism: Reasonable pluralism refers fact there exists a plurality yet incompatible comprehensive moral doctrines (religions, philosophies, worldviews) within liberal democracies. The corresponding is politically acceptable solution cannot refer only one these doctrines. Yet adequate need not come at expense an ethical solution, if it based on beliefs are (1) shared overlapping consensus and (2) systematized through public reason. Therefore, Rawlsian justificatory framework able adequately address elaborate how might be employed for purpose.
